Donation provides so many benefits to people in need of transplantation. We thank you and your organization for your support in facilitating the donation process. Your role in connecting Legacy of Life with potential donor families at the time of death is a crucial part of a very important process. THANK YOU!

Suggested Procedures:

* At the time of death, please contact Legacy of Life at 1-800-397-3077. This number is answered 24 hours per day, every day of the year.

* When you call, please have the following information available:

    * Name of deceased
    * Age of deceased
    * Cause of death
    * Name of next of kin
    * A phone number where we can reach the next of kin

* Given time is of the essence, please provide as accurate of information as possible, particularly relating to a correct number where we can reach the next of kin in a timely manner.

* We suggest you DO NOT try to discuss the option of donation with the family. We have found a telephone call from our trained family services coordinator is more comfortable for the family and more effective at explaining existing options associated with donation.

* If it is convenient, we would ask you hand out a copy of the Legacy of Life brochure to the family. You can also mention that Legacy of Life will be contacting the family. Again, we suggest leaving the donation "presentation" to the staff of Legacy of Life .

In-Service Education

Legacy of Life provides training to your staff through in-services. In addition to typical training and review of processes, we also take some time to recognize and thank you and your staff for your contribution to the donation process.

These in-services also serve to document your office's compliance with the donation regulations.

Bereavement Assistance to Families

In addition to contacting families regarding donation, our staff are trained to assist families in coping with their loss. In addition, we provide a number of group meeting opportunities, a series of booklets mailed to assist the family with grieving, and multiple opportunities to honor donors and their families. We genuinely believe donation can be an important part of the healing process for families and we work with them to achieve this end.

Communications Tools

To assist with your communications, we have developed a number of tools to facilitate communications regarding donation. Many can be downloaded and printed directly from this website.

About a donor, Jackie, as described by her family

She was only nineteen when the Lord decided to take her home. She loved life and lived it to the fullest. Jackie was such a giving and loving person. Through Legacy of Life she is still giving to many others who will never have the chance to meet her or get to know her. But, she knows of her gift!

About a donor, Bobby, as told by his wife Edna

In making this donor quilt, I thought how much Bobby loved life, his family, friends and most of all me, his wife of 30 years. He was the kind of person that would help anybody, family, friends or even strangers, if he could. That is why he wanted to be an organ and tissue donor, so he could give life to other people even after his death. That was his loving wish for his great love of life.

About Johnny, a donor, as told by his wife Yolanda

Immediately upon Johnny's death, I was asked if I would donate his eyes, bone, and body tissue. Without any hesitation, I agreed on giving someone else the opportunity to be able to see, or the opportunity to walk, or even feel. Giving someone else a chance to live a normal life would have been his legacy. My greatest wish and desire is that everyone would consider donating their loved one's organs and tissues to experience the great joy and peace we now know from helping others in need.
